Situated in a natural harbour facing the northern Mediterranean, Llafranc was always going to be a prime location for a fishing village. For centuries it served that purpose, with habitation dating back at least to Roman times. A harbour-within-a-harbour was eventually built, completing the nautical theme, although today it’s home mainly to pleasure craft for those looking to explore the dramatic Costa Brava coastline.
Lose yourself in cuisine and culture
The transformation from fishing village to tourist retreat started in the 1920s, and by the 1950s it was considered a classy, exclusive and artistic destination. Salvador Dalí, Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor, Ernest Hemingway and many other luminaries would frequent the village, and to this day it has kept something of an aura of exclusivity, perhaps even a spot of harmless mischief.
The main attraction of Llafranc is the perfect sandy beach gifted by nature, enclosed on both sides by tree-covered outcrops forming this calming haven. Sunbathing, splashing in the lapping waves or taking to the water on a boat tour are all daily options. Along the immaculate pine-lined promenade is a line of tasteful restaurants, cafes and bars, and if you wander a little past the front, there are more eateries to sample. They offer local and international cuisine, with an emphasis on the freshest seafood imaginable – and there’s even a Michelin starred restaurant to experience.
Llafranc has managed to keep its low-key identity despite merging with the slightly more populous Calella de Palafrugell to its west. That’s not to be confused with Palafrugell, which is the name of both the municipality and its main town, which is located four kilometres inland. Calella de Palafrugell is itself a charming sea-facing resort, with its own beaches, restaurants and watersport opportunities (snorkelling and kayaking are popular), and it’s only a 20-minute stroll from the centre of Llafranc. If you fancy a 40 minute walk in the opposite direction, you’ll be rewarded with Cala Pedrosa, a beautiful secluded beach with its own friendly restaurant.
Spreading your wings
With so much to do around here, you might choose to spend all your time in and around your villa or apartment. But if you’re looking to get out and about, you’ve got plenty of options. The Medieval village of Pals is a short drive away to the north. It’s one of those places that feels historic while being a fully-functioning modern habitation, and it’s well worth the trip. The city of Girona is 45 minutes away by car, and makes for a fabulous day trip – you simply can’t miss the cathedral which can trace its history back a thousand years.
If walking is your thing, Llafranc is on the Catalonian section of the GR 92, a scenic hiking network that currently stretches 550 kilometres from the French border at Portbou to Pont de l’Olivar, where Valencia begins. The route will eventually cover the whole of Spain’s Mediterranean coastline, but this section is already complete and signposted for adventurous travellers. Will you walk north or south? It’s up to you!

From Girona Airport:
Sagalés bus to Girona city centre. Then take the Sarfa/Moventis bus to Palafrugell, connecting to Llafranc via local bus or taxi.

Sarfa/Moventis operates buses from Barcelona to Palafrugell, connecting to Llafranc, via local bus or taxi.
From Perpignan–Rivesaltes Airport (PGF) (France):
Take a shuttle bus from the airport to the city centre of Perpignan. Then, take the bus to Girona, followed by the Sarfa/Moventis bus to Palafrugell and connect to Llafranc via local bus or taxi.
