A private pool changes the shape of a holiday. Nobody's reserving loungers at eight in the morning, children can swim without an audience, and the evening doesn't end because the pool area closes. Most villas in our Spanish collection have one, and we've been in all of them — so we can tell you how the pool actually sits before you book, not just that it exists.

What to ask about a pool before you book

Listings tend to say "private pool" and stop there, which hides most of what matters. Size is the obvious one — a pool that suits a family of four feels small with twelve people around it. Then there's orientation: a pool in shade from three in the afternoon is a different proposition from one that holds the sun until evening.

Worth asking about too: whether it's fenced or gated if you're travelling with young children, whether it's overlooked by neighbouring properties, how much terrace and shade surrounds it, and whether it's heated if you're coming outside high summer. Ask us about a specific villa and we'll tell you honestly rather than quoting the listing back at you.

Where our pool villas are

All three regions have them, but the setting differs more than you'd expect.

Costa Brava

Costa Brava pools tend to sit in mature gardens with pines and dry-stone terracing, often on sloping plots above the coves. Tamariu, Llafranc and Begur carry most of them. The trade-off is steps — the same terrain that gives you the view and the privacy means the pool isn't always level with the house.

Costa Blanca

Javea has the flattest, most generous plots in the collection, which generally means bigger pools with more terrace around them and fewer steps to negotiate. The Costa Blanca also gets the longest season — pools here are usable well into October in most years.

Mallorca

Every one of our Mallorca villas has a private pool, without exception. Around Cala d'Or they sit in walled gardens close to the coves; further north around Pollensa the plots are larger and more rural, with the Tramuntana as a backdrop.

Pools and young children

Pool safety varies property by property. Some of our villas have fenced or gated pools; many don't, which is normal for Spanish rentals and worth knowing before you arrive rather than after. If there are children in the party who can't swim confidently, tell us at the enquiry stage and we'll confirm the arrangement at each shortlisted villa in writing.

We'd rather have that conversation up front than leave it to chance. It's the single most common thing families wish they'd asked.
