Tamariu: Exploring the Rich History of a Costa Brava Gem

As far as stunning Spanish location go, Tamariu is one of the best kept secrets. This picturesque coastal village on the Costa Brava has everything you need for a tranquil escape. It is infused with a fascinating history and breathtaking surroundings.

One of the smaller coastal holiday destinations on the Costa Brava, the story of the origins and the remaining historic sites leave a big impression. While many tourists head to Tamariu for relaxing, sun-soaked breaks, historians love exploring the Tamariu journey from its humble beginnings to the enchanting holiday destination it has become.

First settlement

It is believed that the first human settlement in this part of Spain was pre Roman times. Phoenician seafarers came to set-up on the beckoning shores, looking for where they could fish and trade from the habour.

Roman and Medieval journey

Tamariu was identified by the Romans as an ideal location for military purposes, also benefitting from fishing and trade opportunities. Much like some of the other local coastal towns, the Romans built villas in Tamariu and the nearby Empúries Roman ruins site provides an insight into these times.

Through the Medieval period, Tamariu was invaded multiple times and experienced various reins of power. The local villagers relied on their fishing industry throughout this challenging era.

Establishing the fishing industry

Around the 12th century, Tamariu established a thriving fishing industry. The village consisted mainly of fishermen’s homes and the local economy was driven by the success of the fishing village. While many other areas of the Costa Brava have undergone modern developments, Tamariu remains largely untouched, providing a unique glimpse of the historic journey the village has taken.

Tamariu’s tourism

As the village’s infrastructure developed in the 20th century, Tamariu started to see more visitors coming to experience it’s charm.

The tranquil atmosphere attracted visitors looking for a peaceful break from their busy lifestyles and the hectic cities. By the 1960s, the beautiful beaches started to bring even more tourists to explore the mesmerising waters and surrounding landscapes.

Why book a holiday in Tamariu?

For holidaymakers looking for an authentic taste of the Costa Brava, Tamariu is a place where you will get this. From the culinary delights in the local traditional restaurants to the untouched beaches, the village is the ultimate scenic retreat.
